April 2018.- When someone asks Scott Schuman what it takes to have the honor of standing in front of his camera lens, his response is always the same: a unique style that reflects a special personality and goes beyond time and trends. It is no surprise that the photographer who in recent years changed the rules of style is now the pioneer of finding it outside of fashion weeks by taking photos of the guests at one of the most iconic hotels in the world and the best luxury hotel in the Dominican Republic: El Embajador, a Royal Hideaway Hotel.
The Royal Hideaway brand and the photographer have joined forces for a second time in this exclusive experience for guests: their stay at El Embajador, a Royal Hideaway Hotel, is immortalized by the camera of one of the most acclaimed fashion photographers in the world. A series of photographs are transformed into a campaign filled with unique moments, The Guest List, in this second edition following the first campaign at Royal Hideaway Playacar, Mexico.
On this occasion, Scott Schuman captures guests who personify the urban luxury of a legendary hotel that is a symbol of Santo Domingo. “A hotel’s guests are closely tied to the vibes it gives off. Certain places in the world are able to represent the local culture of their surroundings, and El Embajador is without a doubt one of those destinations,” states the American photographer.
This hotel has become a true emblem of culture in the Dominican Republic and its magic has been conveyed throughout its 62-year history by maestros such as Francis Ford Coppola in scenes from The Godfather Part II. The hotel that is now being photographed by Scott Schuman is the same one where members of the Kennedy family have stayed, a number of political summits have been held, and fashion legends such as Carolina Herrera and Oscar de la Renta have confirmed its status as a symbol of style.
The Guest List: The experience of being photographed by a fashion icon
Giving guests the exclusive feeling of being immortalized by a fashion photography legend is the concept behind The Guest List project. The campaign conveys the personality of Royal Hideaway through the people who best represent it, the chain’s guests, and by the person that is best able to capture them: Scott Schuman, the photographer who is an expert in reflecting the soul of the places he visits through people.
“My job is rather simple. I travel the world and take photos of people, places, interior spaces and landscapes that inspire me, and then I share them on the Internet,” the photographer explains about his work.
About El Embajador, a Royal Hideaway Hotel
With a foundation based on the luxury of the most exclusive and quality service, El Embajador is a unique establishment located in a stimulating and multicultural city. Backed by a 62-year history, the hotel is a cultural symbol of Santo Domingo and a place that locals and travelers must visit.
Its 298 rooms are strategically positioned to offer views of the Caribbean Sea, the city and the exotic gardens surrounding the building. Decorated with a timeless classic elegance, the rooms have been recently renovated to offer the best facilities. When all of this is combined with luxurious service, the experience becomes one of the best that a visitor can find in Santo Domingo and only at El Embajador, a Royal Hideaway Hotel.

Madrid, February 1st 2018. – He had never done it before, but there must be a first time for everything, even for Scott Schuman. For the first time in his career, the photographer and founder of the The Sartorialist blog, considered the pioneer in the photography urban fashion, has abandoned the streets of the world’s major cities and the international fashion week runways for a five-star hotel on the Riviera Maya. And now, Scott Schuman has signed off the Royal Hideaway Playacar hotel’s latest marketing campaign, using its guests as his subjects. The hotel and the photographer joined forces to provide this unique experience for guests, one inspired by the aesthetic of social networks, just like a stay at a Royal Hideaway according to The Sartorialist.
The Guest Listis a series of photographs taken by Scott Schuman during his stay, and illustrates the essential character of the hotel through its guests. He regularly posts on his blog street-style photos of all kinds of people representing timeless attitude, style and elegance, and now guests at the Royal Hideaway Playacar have become part of that select group of people throughout the world who epitomize what The Sartorialist defines as true style. Thus, the hotel has treated its guests to the experience of featuring in the work of someone who is currently one of the fashion industry’s most prestigious photographers.
The figures speak for themselves: the blog that Scott Schuman set up in 2005 has 14 million page views per month, has attracted a million Instagram followers and, over the last two years, has become one of the fastest-growing blogs, doubling its number of active users to exceed 400 million. An average of 80 million photos are shared every day, and there is no doubt that those authored by The Sartorialist are among the most popular by virtue of their unique and pioneering ability to capture the style of real people anywhere in the world.
The Guest List: the experience of being photographed by an icon of the fashion world
It is this ability that the photographer draws on in his current marketing campaign for the Royal Hideaway Playacar, an exclusive, five star, adults-only resort overlooking the white sands of an idyllic beach on the Riviera Maya. Normally, it is people walking along the street who reveal the essential character and style of a place or a city, and this premise holds true at the Royal Hideaway Playacar, where the guests are a true reflection of one of the most privileged havens in the Mexican Caribbean.
This is the concept underpinning The Guest List project: to capture the personality of the Royal Hideaway Playacar through the guests who most accurately represent it, and to hire the best person for the job – the photographer Scott Schuman, an expert in conveying the essence of the places he visits.
“My job is very simple. I travel around the world and photograph the people I meet, places, indoor scenes and landscapes that strike me as particularly inspiring, and I share them on the internet”, is how the photographer describes his day-to-day work.
Working within the Royal Hideaway philosophy, the campaign aims to express the values of its brand and hotels by creating a communication code that links style with fashion and special moments. “The magic of this job lies in (…) being spontaneous, capturing moments and people. This place has a certain beauty, confidence and elegance that you don’t often see, and it is very inspiring,” adds the North American. A hotel that radiates exclusivity
The Sartorialist found himself captivated by the atmosphere of the Royal Hideaway Playacar hotel: “I believe it is more than a classic. It has such refinement; it transcends time. It is gorgeous, thrilling. The décor, quality, colour, features and details: everything is done so well, but it also has a timeless quality, (…) a quality that one does not always find in fashion”.
Every visitor to the Royal Hideaway Playacar hotel falls in love with it, thanks to its unique location overlooking the white sands of one of the Riviera Maya’s idyllic beaches, and thanks to the exclusive range of luxury experiences offered within an all-inclusive package. With 200 superb rooms offering the promise of a luxury stay in a lush garden setting, the hotel provides every facility required for an amazing vacation, including 6 restaurants serving international cuisine, with the highlight being the Chef’s Table experience at the Ventanas Restaurant.
Luxury pervades every corner of the hotel, including its 6 swimming pools, spa and gym, as well as the host of experiences on offer, both within the hotel itself and on the idyllic beach outside. Your dream of tranquility and privacy in a luxury adults-only setting can become reality on the Riviera Maya, thanks to the Royal Hideaway Playacar – Adults Only part of the Leading Hotels of the World consortium. About Scott Schuman
Scott Schuman has a close and long-standing relationship with the fashion world. In 2009, Penguin published an anthology of his snapshots which to date has sold over 100,000 copies, and his work forms part of the permanent display at both the Victoria & Albert Museum and the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography. He is currently working on his next book. Thus, the subjects of the snapshots taken during his stay at the Royal Hideaway Playacar will achieve a distinction reserved for only a select few: the honor of having been photographed by the man considered the father of Street Style. October 2017- One thing is clear in the world of traveling— the way we travel has radically changed since social networks exploded onto the scene. Both with regard to the planning phase and to broadcasting the stay from the destination itself, these have become a source of information and inspiration, increasingly influencing our decisionmaking. Among the effects is the fact thatwe’ve become voyeurs— we love images that show us the lives of others and, in the case of influencers, the life we would like to lead, even ifonly fora few moments.
Always traveling to paradise, always eating the best breakfast and always closer to the beach than any other mortal at this moment— this is how influencers travel and what they show us on their profiles. If we all want to be like our favorite opinion leaders, why not give it a try? Using this idea, Barceló Hotel Group brings you these ideal vacations through its Barcelostories.com project where over 50 of the most internationally-recognized Instagrammers share more of 500 pictures and videos of their Caribbean experiences to inspire future travelers. Going to where they’ve been has never been so easy.
The use of Instagram, the most important decision-making tool, has doubled in use in just two years
A bit of context: six out of every 10 people in the world have a cell phone, on which they spend an average of 170 minutes per day. What do they do? According to the latest Ditrendria Report in 2017, Mobiles in Spain and in the World, they watch videos, browse the internet, and of course, go on social networks.
Despite the fact that you can’t fathom spending any more timeopening and closing these apps than you already do, according to experts in the sector this trend has only just begun; experts predicted that by 2022 our favorite pastime of seeing what our friends (and enemies) and leading influencers are up to will increase by 39%, and already in the past two years Instagram use has doubled, exceeding 400 million active users. This activity has changed our relationships with our interests, from fashion and food to travel.
And there is no lack of examples: the famous images of Trolltunga Rock in Norway caused an increase in its number of visitors from 500 to 40,000 in just five years; and theareas preferred by influencers in New Zealand saw an increase of 14%. The reason? Social network content that transformed these places into must sees by so-called social travelers.
Barceló Stories: 5 clicks away, from Instagram to booking the experience
Given that we love to let our fantasies control our thumbs and it’sthey that click on the heart icon each time the travel influencers Thiago Correa or Courtney Scott post a photo of their latest adventure on Instagram, the Barceló Stories platform is back for its second year with over 20 new faces (in 2016 there were already 26 Instagrammers) from the United States, Brazil, Mexico, Canada and Russia. They share their travel experiences from a dozen Barceló Hotel Group hotels in Aruba, Costa Rica, Mexico and the Dominican Republic, using videos they made themselves which serve as inspiration for all those planning a vacation.
Through the website, future travelers can access all of the necessary information to replicate the plan and even book their stay and experiences in the exact same place where the leading Instagrammers stayed. Is it possible to travel like them? Barceló Hotel Group gives its response through the Barceló Stories platform— yes, and it can be done in under five clicks.
This way travelers can replicate the plans of 50 known influencers, choosing their future vacations based on social content. Barceló Stories allows new travelers to become inspired by applying filters for preferred destination and interests.
And this so-called social travel is also a plus for travelers with very clear interests: food, sports, beauty and romantic getaways are just some of the options offered by the platform to complete the steps taking you from a post on social media to the perfect vacation.
Over 80 million photos shared per day— a record of inspiration
Because each day an average of over 80 million photos are sharedon Instagram, because 1.9 billion people around the world regularly log onto social media and because one of the three most-bought products by cell-phone users on their smartphones are travel-related, it is clear what millions of people are sharing, without being totally conscious of it— we love to see and be seen, and if it’s in a bathing suit with a platter of freshly-cut fruit in the frame and the blue sea in the background, even better. Like.

Known as the Padrón brothers, the native Tenerife chefs will head up Maresía – the resort’s rooftop cocktail bar, restaurant and pool bar.

This will conserve the nutritional value of the food produce and ensure a rich and wholesome flavour in all their culinary creations. Whilst Juan Carlos will be responsible for the main courses and Jonathan will be specialising in desserts, all dishes will be inspired by the local Canarian surroundings. Delicious creations from the menu include oysters served with a lychee vinaigrette; shrimps in a tapioca jus; Montesdeoca cheese ravioli with a lentil broth and aniseed and lemon yoghurt with toasted chocolate for those with a sweet tooth.
General Manager, Fernando Turnes, has said ‘I am thrilled to welcome the highly-acclaimed Padrón brothers to take the helm and oversee the culinary offering at Maresía at Royal Hideaway Corales Resort. We believe their skillset and expertise will offer our guests the chance to experience some truly remarkable local cuisine and not only make the hotel a foodie destination, but Tenerife too.’
The Padrón brothers add: ‘We are delighted to be working at the brand new Royal Hideaway Corales Resort. This is a hugely exciting next step and we are thoroughly looking forward to showcasing Canarian cuisine at its best to the hotel guests from across the globe.’

September 15, 2017. In a society filled with startups, it is hard to decide what has more value: ephemeral innovations or classics that withstand the test of time. In the case of El Embajador, a Royal Hideaway Hotel, this dichotomy does not exist because it has reinvented itself by incorporating the latest technologies from the 21st century and the most cutting-edge designs, while keeping intact the DNA that made it the first luxury hotel in the Dominican Republic and one of the best establishments in Latin America. $40 million and nearly two years of renovations were needed to rediscover its legend, the one that led renowned people from the world of film, music, culture and politics to stay there when visiting the Dominican Republic.
M Y T H AND L E G E N D
The best hotel in the Dominican Republic:
El Embajador was inaugurated on February 12, 1956, coinciding with the Fair of Peace and Fraternity of the Free World, the Universal Exhibition that took place in Santo Domingo that year. From the moment it opened—an event that brought together the cream of Dominican society—it became a social meeting point. Its Embassy Club was home to the best musical performances in the nation; the facilities were used on a number of occasions as the set of great films such as The Godfather Part II by Francis Ford Coppola and The Lost City by Andy García, among others; and in 1965, it even hosted an assembly of the Organization of American States (OEA), which was attended by dozens of heads of state.
In addition, the parties that were held in the lush tropical gardens, which covered and continue to cover 11,500 square meters, adjacent to the emblematic pool, were attended by renowned guests such as Errol Flynn, Rock Hudson and Mario Moreno “Cantinflas”, to name a few; and the ballrooms were decked out to welcome many fashion icons along the lines of Óscar de la Renta, Carolina Herrera, Jean Paul Gautier and Elie Saab, who chose El Embajador to present their new creations to Latin America’s jet-set crowd.
El Embajador shines once again under the exclusive Royal Hideaway brand:
Backed by this history and with an exquisite hilltop location in the exclusive Bellavista neighborhood, with the capital of primacies at its feet, and with the Caribbean Sea as the backdrop, this emblematic establishment once again shines thanks to the Barceló Hotel Group, which acquired it in 2015, and to the exclusive Royal Hideaway brand, becoming the top urban icon of this prestigious standard.
S P E C T A C U L A R R O O M S
As part of the return to Olympus, the first step consisted of rejuvenating the 298 junior suites (many with breathtaking views of the Caribbean) with elegant and discrete designs; with touches of glamour, such as the amenities from the select brand Aqua di Parma, which represents authentic luxury that understands it is backed by countless unforgettable experiences and memories; and with an exceptional spaciousness that ranges from 41 square meters in the smaller rooms to 500 square meters in the Presidential Suite.
A Presidential Suite that occupies the entire top floor (9th) of the building, created with the firm purpose of becoming the jewel of the new El Embajador, features 245 square meters of floor space plus a 150 square meter terrace with a sundeck and hot tub; a separate bedroom for service or security; a fully-equipped kitchen so the hotel chef may prepare private meals for the most distinguished guests; a board room; and a lift with private access, among other aspects.
Like other Royal Hideaway hotels, El Embajador has wanted to honor Dominican culture and the capital it has called home for more than 60 years by assigning to every floor a primacy. These are the first official buildings built in the New World after the Spaniards reached the Americas and, although many people do not know this, all are located in Santo Domingo: The Catedral Primada de América (2nd floor); the Alcázar de Colón (3rd floor); the Fortaleza Ozama (4th floor); the Casas Reales (5th floor); the Monasterio de San Francisco (6th floor) and the Hospital San Nicolás de Bari (7th floor).
With the assistance of the renowned Dominican historian José Chez Checo, reproductions of these artworks appear in the hallways of six of the nine floors at the new El Embajador, contributing their historic beauty to further heighten the legend of this classic among classics.
A N I C O N O F U R B A N L U X U R Y
Recovering the urban soul of El Embajador, which is the venue for more than 100 weddings each year and hosts thousands of urban guests who visit the city, has also focused on improving its meeting rooms and adding an extra 1,000 square meters of ballrooms, including the Protocolo and Diplomatic event rooms as well as the exceptional Signature Venue Embassy Garden, located in the garden along with 40% of the 2,600 square meters that the hotel has set aside for the business segment and covered with a sophisticated 25-meter long floating glass enclosure. It has also consisted of redesigning the spectacular lobby and the prestigious El Jardín restaurant, which together with the Los Porches restaurant, continues to create culinary marvels under the guidance of the acclaimed chef José Soto, and creating a new Wellness & Spa that features a private pool, gym and four treatment rooms that, under the BI name, a Taino word that means LIFE CENTER, provides the perfect dose of peace and tranquility that all urban guests need.
R O Y A L H I D E A W A Y S E R V I C E
Lastly, in order to firmly undertake this new era in El Embajador’s legend alongside Royal Hideaway, the hotel has added exclusive services such as the Ambassador Level, which offers executives on the 5th and 6th floors access to a private front desk for check-in and check-out, as well as an independent lounge in which to peacefully eat breakfast with sea views, read the newspaper, or have coffee or tea throughout the day. Another new addition is the Royal Level, created so the guests on the 7th floor, 8th floor and the Presidential Suite may have a private lounge with exquisite culinary alternatives, two meeting rooms and personalized service, including a butler and secretary, throughout the day.
A new hotel that, as of October 1st, will mark the end of a journey into the future while maintaining its diplomatic soul intact.
Executive Junior Suite from $164 a night with breakfast included

May 5, 2017. When the Barceló Hotel Group announced that 2017 was going to be a year of strong growth for the company, a certain destination it had been pursuing was on its mind: Mexico City, the capital of the country where the chain has its second strongest presence with 21 establishments. That time is now and reaching the renowned Avenida Reforma will become a reality once the pending terms and approvals specified in the sale contract are resolved.

The 5-star hotel with 500 rooms is a classic along Avenida Reforma, which is one of the most dynamic areas in the Mexican capital in terms of shopping, tourism and business. It has experienced strong real estate growth in recent years thanks to the construction of large skyscrapers and the restoration of emblematic buildings. The establishment, which was completely renovated in 2015, is expected to form part of the Barceló Hotel Group this August with the name Barceló México Reforma. The modern facilities include a buffet restaurant, steakhouse restaurant, lobby bar, sports bar and lounge.
According to Miguel Ángel Guardado, Managing Director of the Barceló Hotel Group in Mexico, “Although we already have a strong presence in Mexico and it has taken us some time to reach the capital, we are proud to establish our presence here with such an emblematic hotel. It will be a pleasure to show the Mexican market our extensive expertise in the urban hospitality industry, which we have been developing over the course of many years in major Latin American and European cities.” He went on to conclude, “We are going to do this with our classic brand, Barceló, which will enable us to transform Barceló México Reforma into a reference for quality and exclusiveness where guests can enjoy exciting and unforgettable experiences.”
Palma de Mallorca, 18 April 2017. The Barceló Group recently reached an agreement with AR Global to buy the latter’s 60% stake in the US hotel management company Crestline Hotels & Resorts. Combined with the 40% it already owned, this acquisition means that Barceló now owns all the capital stock of the US management company, one of the country’s biggest independent operators.
The Barceló Group had already acquired all of Crestline’s capital stock in 2002, when the management company was operating 7,000 rooms in the US, and merged it with its own management company to form Barceló Crestline. The Spanish group kept control of the company until 2013, when it sold 60% of the capital stock to AR Global, while continuing to hold its 40% stake until now, when it has once again acquired all of the capital stock.
According to Vicente Fenollar, Chief Financial Officer of the Barceló Group: “The purchase of the 60% of the Crestline management company shares that we did not hold is a very good transaction for our Company; we now own all of the capital stock of a profitable, solvent firm of good standing in the United States, and this places us in an excellent position to continue to pursue our penetration in the country”.
Founded in 2000 and based in Fairfax (Virginia), Crestline Hotels & Resorts currently manages 112 hotels in 29 states and the District of Columbia, with over 16,000 rooms, which makes it one of the biggest independent operators in the United States. It manages properties under the Marriott, Hilton, Intercontinental and Hyatt brands, as well as independent hotels and conference centres throughout almost the entire country. It has a workforce of 5,260 employees.
With this consolidation of its interest in Crestline, Barceló Hotel Group will now operate a total of 228 establishments in 21 countries, with over 50,300 rooms and nearly 30,500 staff.
